After getting positive feedback of the heritage commission on the residential transformation in Zierikzee, it is time to consider final design solutions. Especially the wall next to the T-shaped staircase, the steel window frames and the sightline through the building were researched using a physical model of the building.
Let me first say that i would like to use my new website to share the design process, new techniques or other facts about the projects I am working on. Rather then just showing the final result I would like to reflect on my own process and share it.
In this case I would like to show you in which way I used a physical model to compare some aspects of the design of the monument in Zierikzee. The proportions of an internal window frame and the length and shape of a wall next to a staircase were debatable and the floorplans and sections did not provide enough information to make a deliberate decision. Therefor different options of these parts were lasercutted and compared in a flexible model.

The model was made out of birch wood and the inside was covered in white cardboard. Simulating the secondary walls and plaster ceilings. By making the model detachable it was possible to insert different components and compare them.
Different options for the wall along the staircase
After careful comparing them It was decided to choose the first options in the images shown above. The last 6 steps of the staircase are not covered by the wall in order to create a larger platform between the three staircases and to increase daylight. At last the rear facade was researched. In the end it was decided to design two doors with a large horizontal window above it, creating a T-shaped window frame.
